What Actually is Self-Care - (And What It’s Not)

We hear the phrase “self-care” all the time... on social media, in conversations, splashed across candle labels and wellness ads. But for something so popular, it’s still deeply misunderstood.
So, let’s go over it: self-care is not just about spa days, luxury products, or an excuse to cancel plans. It’s far more meaningful, and far more essential than that.
🌿 What Self-Care Isn’t
Let’s start with what self-care is not:
It’s not indulgent
It’s not selfish
It’s not something you “earn” after being exhausted
Somewhere along the way, self-care got reduced to temporary fixes... things you do after you’ve hit burnout. While a massage, a vacation, or a night in with your favourite show can be self-care, those things aren’t the full picture.
Real self-care goes deeper than surface-level relaxation.
“Self-care is giving the world the best of you, not what’s left of you.” – Katie Reed
🌿 What Self-Care Actually Is
At its core, self-care is anything that helps you feel grounded, connected, and well... physically, emotionally, mentally, or spiritually.
It’s about paying attention to your needs and meeting them without shame or delay.
That might look like:
Saying no to something you don’t have the capacity for
Drinking water before your body begs for it
Journalling when your mind feels heavy
Turning your phone off and stepping outside
Letting yourself rest without “earning it”
Creating space to feel your feelings without rushing past them
It’s less about what you do and more about why you do it. It’s the practice of choosing yourself, on purpose.
🌿 Why It Matters for Everyone
Self-care isn’t reserved for people with a lot of free time, or those going through a crisis. You don’t have to be a parent, a partner, a caregiver or even overwhelmed, to need it.
In fact, the people who seem “fine” often need it most.
Self-care is an act of self-respect. It tells your body and mind: I matter. My needs are valid. I’m allowed to take up space.
When you regularly care for yourself, you’re not just surviving... you’re building a life that supports you instead of draining you.
🌿 Want Help Starting?
Not sure where to begin? I’ve created a self-care worksheet to help you check in with yourself and figure out what you need right now.
Or start with one simple question: “What do I need today that I’ve been putting off?” Then, give yourself permission to follow through... even in small ways.
You deserve to feel cared for, by yourself most of all!
